Considering Epicanthoplasty? Here's What You Need to Know.
If you have a wide space between your eyes or a prominent epicanthal fold (the skin fold covering the inner corner of the eye), epicanthoplasty — a procedure that reshapes the inner eye corner — can help create a more open and defined look. However, this surgery is not necessary for everyone.
Epicanthoplasty involves removing part of the epicanthal fold to naturally expose the inner corner of the eye. It can be performed on its own or in combination with double eyelid surgery. Even a small adjustment — as little as 1–2 mm to as much as 3–5 mm — can noticeably soften and "open up" your gaze.
That said, if the epicanthal fold is barely visible or the space between the eyes is already narrow, the effect of the surgery may be limited. In some cases, it may even result in an unnatural appearance.
That’s why it’s essential to carefully assess your eye structure, facial proportions, and skin condition before deciding on surgery.
Recovery time typically involves suture removal after 5–7 days, with swelling subsiding in about a week. A natural appearance usually returns within 3 weeks. Scarring is minimal, but frequent touching of the surgical area may cause redness to linger, so caution is advised.
Always make your decision after a thorough consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon.
