What is IPL treatment?

IPL is the acronym of the Intense Pulsed Light. It is one kind of laser treatment used to improve wrinkles, freckles, damage due to sun exposure, and birthmarks.

How does IPL differ from other laser treatments? IPL uses many wavelengths of light and goes deep into the dermis. Although it penetrates the deep layer of the skin, it does not cause any serious damage to the skin. In contrast, other laser procedures concentrate on one wavelength of light.

IPL is commonly used to remove skin pigmentation. When IPL is applied, pigment cells of the skin grab light energy. Then the light energy turns into heat. It is heat that destroys and removes unwanted skin pigmentation as well as spots and freckles.

The treated area is cleaned and applied numbing cream for about 10 minutes. After the doctor applies the cooling gel onto the skin. Then he or she passes over the skin with IPL light pulses. You will be wearing dark glasses during the treatment for eye protection. When the procedure is done, the specialist soothes the skin with a cool mask pack.

It is vital to have several sessions of this laser to achieve the maximum result. The doctor recommends that you should repeat the procedure 3~5 times with an interval of 3 weeks.
