What you should know about epicanthoplasty and lateral canthoplasty
Epicanthoplasty and Lateral Canthoplasty are the kinds of plastic surgeries that are designed to correct and reshape the corners of the eye where your upper and lower eyelids meet. This surgery is commonly applied to make small eyes bigger.
Most people suffer from having small eyes because small eyes can impact the person's overall impression by making look him or her tired and inexpressive. Therefore, epicanthoplasty and lateral canthohplasty surgeries are used for correction. Before going into the details of how these two operations are performed, let us go though some terms you might find useful prior to undergoing the aforementioned surgeries.
Firstly, let us discuss the term canthus. What is it? By canthus, it is referred to the corners of the where upper and lower eyelids meet. The canthus can also be categorized into two: the corner of the eye which is closer to the nose is called medial canthus, while the outer corner is known as the lateral canthus. So next time when you have consultation with your plastic surgeon, and if he says he will correct the lateral canthus or medial canthus, by that he means the surgery will reshape inner and outer corners of the eyes.
Next term that is worth knowing is the epicanthal fold. It is the skin fold in your upper eyelid covering the inner corner (medial canthus) of your eyes. This is a genetically passed down on people and mostly common among people of East Asian origin.
Now that we familiarized ourselves with important terms, it is time to dive into the operation. So if your would like to enlarge the corners of the eye whether it is medical canthus or lateral canthus, then canthoplasty would be a solution to do that. To improve the lateral canthus, lateral canthoplasty is performed, and if your main concern is inner conners of the eyes (medial canthus) them epicanthoplasty will help to remove the epicanthal fold also known as "Mongolian fold" and make the opening of the inner of the eye far larger, softer, far more expressive and softer.
Usually, both surgeries (epicanthoplasty and lateral canthoplasty) are conducted in combination with double eyelid surgery and it is mostly popular surgery among Asia celebrities. About the details of each surgery, pre and post-surgery instructions as well as possible side effects I will introduce in our upcoming blog.
